They say don’t sweat the little things. But when it comes to skincare, focussing on the little things regularly goes a long way, because it’s the little things that add up to ensure your skin looks healthy and youthful. That means keeping your skin hydrated with the right moisturiser for your skin type; protected daily with sunscreen and pampered with potent serums. But it also means taking the time for that monthly facial or in my case a toning and rejuvenating treatment like the PicoToning Laser.
Originally introduced to help erase unwanted tattoos, the non-ablative laser treatment is now being used to tackle stubborn pigmentation like age spots, freckles, sunspots and even melasma. It also works to smooth uneven skin texture, improve the appearance of acne scars and stretch marks. But my favourite thing about the PicoToning Laser is that it helps rejuvenate skin by stimulating the production of collagen and elastin (the two proteins that keep your skin smooth and plump) to prevent further skin degeneration.
Keen to experience all these anti-ageing benefits, I scheduled a PicoToning Laser session at Dr Calvin Chan Aesthetics & Laser Clinic. Before the session starts, your skin is analysed. Using a face-mapping machine, your skin is scanned for sun damage, brown spots, wrinkles etc. Thankfully, slathering sunscreen daily had paid off and I didn’t have sun damage to worry about. My main areas of concern were the shallow wrinkles on my forehead – elevens above my nose from when I furrow my brow when concentrating and lines that have started to appear across my forehead from when I lift my brows.
With my concerns mapped out, I was ushered in for my PicoToning Laser. Since it was my first laser treatment, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but was relieved to find that it wasn’t as painful as I imagined. (Though this really depends on each person’s threshold for pain.) The ultra short pulses feel like quick, warm pinpricks – gone before you have a chance to register them – and there is always a cool air blower that helps keep the skin cool and comfortable. The entire PicoToning Laser session took 15 minutes! And while my skin was a little pink after the treatment (it subsided in a few hours) I was allowed to use makeup to conceal it. Talk about zero down time!
Immediately after my skin looked brighter, and I was instructed to keep it hydrated with masks and moisturisers as the skin rebuilt itself. In the weeks to come (because it takes some time for the collagen to regenerate), not only was my skin bright and even toned, it also looked tighter and the lines I was worried about looked softer. Given its benefits, the fact that I can do it in between meetings or during my lunch hour the PicoToning Laser is soon becoming my treatment of choice to keep my skin looking healthy, young and glowing – without looking like I’ve had any “work” done. As I said, it’s the little things that add up over time.
