I may not have been able to completely master the art of French makeup or dressing, but there is one aspect where I am thoroughly French: my hair. Like most French women, I splurge on a good hair cut, which ensures I don’t need to spend time or money on styling or styling products. Instead, as French hair care diktats go, I try to leave it to air dry in an attempt to ensure it looks cool, undone, effortless.
However, living in tropical Singapore where the humidity is almost always 80 percent and it rains every other day, this is a bit of a challenge. My thick hair almost always turns into an unruly mess. Even using a rich shampoo, deep conditioning, working in a smoothing product after and a hair serum during the day prove futile.
Then I tried Kevin Murphy Smooth.Again.Wash (shampoo) and Rinse (conditioner). Specifically created for people with thick, coarse hair, it felt like Kevin Murphy had heard my prayers!
To say the Kevin Murphy Smooth.Again Rinse and Wash have transformed my hair would not be an exaggeration. After just a few washes, the duo had tamed my hair leaving it – well – smooth, manageable and soft! The rich shampoo works up a satisfying lather while key ingredient monoi oil – which is packed with antioxidants, vitamin E and essential fatty acids – enters the hair shaft, closing the cuticle to keep strands smooth and shiny. It also helps reduce protein loss (your hair is essentially all protein) making it less prone to breakage. Sunflower seed extract, murumuru seed butter and olive fruit oil work together to smooth, hydrate and strengthen each strand so they are less prone to frizz and damage from heat styling.
Once I’ve rinsed and repeated, I work in the conditioner only on the lengths of my hair, concentrating on the ends. Combing in the conditioner with my fingers, and whole bathroom is filled with this rich, heady scent – that doesn’t smell like it came from a test tube. The conditioner reinforces the smoothing effect of the shampoo with cocoa seed butter and brazil nut oil that improve hair elasticity and moisturise hair to make it shiny and smooth. Because it’s specifically made to smooth thick hair, you don’t need to use a lot. It took me a couple of washes to figure the right amount of conditioner to use, because too much and it will weigh your hair down.
Founder and creator Kevin Murphy’s approach to hair care is similar to skincare, so it’s not unusual to find antioxidants and anti-ageing ingredients in your shampoo and conditioner. But there’s also cutting edge science involved in making these products the best I’ve tried yet. In the case of Smooth.Again.Rinse, biomimetic keratin protein copies natural hair protein to fit seamlessly only where needed most, fighting frizz and making hair smooth again. (Sorry, couldn’t resist that.)
Since it is always hot and humid where I live, which makes my scalp gets quite greasy, I alternate the Smooth.Again.Wash with the Maxi.Wash. A detoxifying shampoo, it breaks down fatty acids, purifying an oily or flaky scalp and removing build up, for a clear scalp and shiny hair. Think of it as an exfoliator or scrub for your scalp.
Another reason this brand has become my favourite? All Kevin Murphy products are easy on your scalp and hair as well as the environment. Free of parabens and sulphates, they’re not tested on animals, and all ingredients are sourced from companies that are organic and grow and harvest sustainably.
If you have thick, unruly hair, I urge you to give the Kevin Murphy Smooth.Again Rinse and Wash a try. If not, Kevin Murphy places a lot of emphasis on education and all stockists are trained to recommend the best hair care routine for your type of scalp and hair. You will not regret it.
The Smooth.Again range was gifted for a review. However, I have been using other Kevin Murphy products before this.
Great Post, I was waiting for this post ever since you first posted about Kevin Murphy on your Instagram post. I wanted to hear a ‘Yes’ from you to go ahead, I have been eyeing this brand for quite some time and now it is time to splurge. 🙂
